Combating Spring Allergies
By Jane Cronin, Naturopath
Spring is in the air, all the lovely blossoms are on the trees and - guess what - you have started sneezing, your eyes are watering and you can’t breathe! But don’t panic - there are ways to lessen those allergies without r
esorting to antihistamines.
Food allergies can very often be at the root of many skin conditions, seasonal allergies and digestive disorders. Constant exposure to foods we are allergic or intolerant to can cause inflammation in the digestive tract, which then leads to damage. As 70 % of the immune system is in the digestive system this damage eventually leads to over sensitivity of the immune system, which makes us more sensitive to airborne allergens. Therefore by cutting out the allergenic foods and repairing the digestive system we can reduce the sensitivity to airborne allergens. Dairy consumption - whether you're intolerant or not - can also contribute to excess mucous and that runny nose.
The liver is responsible for processing and removing toxins from the body. If the body is overwhelmed with toxins, the liver will not be able to remove them all and they start to re-circulate in the body and hence build up. One of the things that needs to be removed by the liver is histamine, which is the substance released when an allergen is detected. This substance is what causes the adverse reactions we get to pollen and these reactions will persist if the histamine is not
removed. Simple ways to help your liver are to reduce or eliminate coffee, alcohol, processed and take away foods and to increase fresh fruit and vegetables and water.
Naturopaths at House of Health offer a number of solutions to the above problems, as well as natural supplements and herbs for reducing sinus inflammation, clearing the liver and stabilizing the immune system to reduce allergic reactions.

Measles and the Vitamin A Connection
Measles (English) is caused by an airborne virus that enters through the nose and throat. It can also be contracted by touching the infected person or an object they have touched.
The seriousness of this childhood illness can be greatly worsened by a concommitant Vitamin A deficiency, which is surprisingly common in New Zealand children! Read more about it here.
It's Official: Simple Interventions Reduce Transmission of Epidemic Respiratory Viruses
Hygiene and physical measures may effectively reduce transmission of respiratory tract viruses including influenza, according to the results of a systematic review reported in the September 23 issue of the British Medical Journal.
"A Cochrane review (a highly respected analysis of published studies) in 2007 showed that physical interventions such as good personal hygiene, barriers, and distancing are highly effective," wrote Tom Jefferson, MD, from the Acute Respiratory Infections Group, Cochrane Collaboration, in Rome, Italy, and colleagues. "However, the current mainstay of pandemic interventions still seems to be vaccines and antiviral drugs, with no evidence supporting their widespread use, especially against a seemingly mild threat such as the novel H1N1 virus."

Why Eat Raw Fruits & Vegetables?
Including fresh, raw fruits and vegetables into your diet has many advantages.
They contain critical enzymes (destroyed by cooking) that benefit digestion, and hence assist those with digestive problems and/or weight issues.
They contain Vitamins and Antioxidants (also destroyed by cooking), essential for the immune system – to help fight off colds, flus, measles and many other conditions.
Subtle ways to introduce raw fruits and vegetables into your family’s diet:
- Always serve cut up raw vegetables and/or fruit sticks with meals
- For fussy eaters, display salad ingredients on a large platter in the middle of the table – so everyone can make their own salad.
- Children who are really fussy – let them choose ONE food that they can eliminate from their diet that month, but they must eat everything else presented to them. Reward charts may also be encouraging.
- Invest in a juicer – and experiment with different raw foods! Contact us for tips on purchasing a juicer - or to have us email you when a leading brand gets added to our e-shop soon!
Spring is the season of barbeques, salads and colder foods - what a great way to introduce some raw foods - which are full of natural enzymes - into your diet.
To follow is an attractive, flavoursome (raw food) dish idea; ideal served as an aperitif – or part of a main meal.
