Neuromuscular Therapy
What is Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT)?
Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is a specialised form of massage using a very specific and detailed approach to help achieve balance between the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. This is acheived by targeting the possible cause and/or perpetuating factors leading to and keeping the body in a state of imbalance.
NMT techniques can be relaxing or more intense depending on each case, bearing in mind that any relief of pain will contribute to a more relaxed state.
NMT addresses the following elements that contribute to pain or dysfunction:
-
Ischaemia This is pain caused by inadequate blood supply to soft tissues. The area may also be hypersensitive to touch.
-
Trigger Points: These are highly irritated points in muscles which may refer pain to other parts of the body. Working with these Trigger points can affect reduction in pain in those other areas.
-
Nerve Compression or Entrapment: Any pressure on a nerve by soft tissue (muscles, ligaments & tendons) can cause pain, tingling or numbness. Releasing the trapped nerve not only improves associated pain, but increases function as well.
-
Postural Distortion: Poor posture, over time, leads to imbalances of the muscular system, which in turn can lead to excess wear & tear on joints and soft tissues.
-
Biomechanical Dysfunction: Imbalance of the musculoskeletal system results in faulty movement patterns.
How does NeuromuscularTherapy (NMT) work?
Circulation of the nervous systems currents are often hindered because of adhesions or restrictions in muscular fibres. NMT assists the natural process of the body to begin clearing these obstructions by:
-
Helping to remedy the cause rather than deal with symptoms.
-
Eradicating muscular spasms and reducing/removing trigger points.
-
Encouraging the body’s ability for self healing or normalisation.
-
Facilitating a more rapid and permanent recovery.
-
Assisting postural self-alignment.
-
Bringing awareness about your own body.
What causes pain or dysfunction?
Recent or past injuries, stress, a lifetime of inappropriate postural habits or repetitive activities such as sports or computer work, causes your body to compensate by allowing certain muscles to shorten or lengthen or by recruiting secondary muscles to take over. This creates muscle imbalances affecting posture leading to excess wear & tear on joints and soft tissues (muscles, ligaments & tendons) causing chronic pain & fatigue.
Who can benefit from neuromuscular therapy (NMT)?
Anyone who wishes to maintain a healthy and injury free lifestyle or those that suffer from stress, tension or chronic muscular pain may find neuromuscular therapy beneficial. Conditions that respond well to NMT include sciatica, rotator cuff dysfunction, carpal tunnel syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, and even headaches.
What to expect from a neuromuscular therapy (NMT) session:
Each session is tailor made to suit YOUR individual requirements, whether it be relaxation or targeting a specific area. Firstly, you will be asked to complete a confidential health history profile so we can work together to identify factors that may be contributing to your pain. If necessary your posture or muscular range of movement may be assessed to identify possible muscle imbalances in order to create an appropriate treatment plan. Finally, using specialised forms of massage therapy & incorporating many different techniques, I will encourage your body to rebalance itself while providing education so that you may manage your own health in order to experience long lasting, beneficial changes.
Something to think about:
In order to reverse a process of soft tissue injury, we must follow a plan that allows the tissues to recover in the most beneficial manner; it is therefore more cost affective to allow our bodies to work optimally through regular treatments than to rehabilitate after injury or when pain or dysfunction have already become chronic.
