About Witch Hazel Water

Witch hazel is a tree that is indigenous to damp woods on the Atlantic coast of North America with a long history of traditional use by native Americans. The twigs and bark are distilled to produce an astringent liquid which is also referred to as Witch hazel.

Witch Hazel has a long history of use for medicinal applications dating back to the Native Americans and after centuries of popular use, it is still used today in many leading personal care products.

To make witch hazel, steam is passed through the leaves and twigs, producing the astringent witch hazel water (note the "witch" has nothing to do with broomsticks, but refers to the bendiness of the wood!)

The main constituents of witch hazel water include calcium oxalate, gallotannins, safrole, and chemicals naturally found in the essential oil, such as carvacrol and eugenol.

Uses for Witch Hazel Water

Witch hazel water is mainly used externally and has been used topically as an astringent and anti-bacterial treatment for skin to alleviate inflammation caused by acne and eczema. It is also used on haemorrhoids, minor bleeding, and may be helpful in soothing skin rashes and irritation as it has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects.

Witch Hazel's renowned astringent properties lend themselves to a variety of cosmetic and therapeutic applications. It can be used on all skin types including sensitive, dry or oily and is commonly found in cleansers, toners and product for blemish or acne-prone skin.

Safety of Witch Hazel Water

Witch Hazel water has an excellent safety profile, but as with all things, there is a chance that some people may have an allergic reaction.

We recommend (if you've never used Witch Hazel before) to first test on a small patch of skin and monitor it for 24 hours. If there is no redness, itching, or irritation, it should be safe to apply to a larger area.
