What is Konjac Glucomannan?
Konjac Glucomannan is a water-soluble dietary fibre derived from the large, starchy root of the konjac plant, known as the “corm.”
Konjac Glucomannan root has long been used in China, Japan and Southeast Asia for both cooking and medicinal purposes.
In traditional Chinese medicine, a gel made from konjac root flour has been used to treat asthma, respiratory problems, skin disorders and other ailments for more than 2,000 years.
How Konjac Aids Digestive Health
As a bulk-forming natural laxative, Konjac glucomannan is sometimes used to relieve constipation. A 2006 study found that small doses of the supplement improved bowel movements in chronically constipated adults by 30 percent, while also improving gut bacteria.
Konjac glucomannan is considered a low FODMAP food source. It supports healthy digestive function without uncomfortable side effects, such as excessive gas, bloating, or loose stool that is commonly seen with high FODMAP foods and fibres in some people. It helps move food through the digestive tract at the right pace, helping you feel full longer. Konjac glucomannan powder can be easily added to a wide range of food and drinks without affecting the taste, aroma or texture.
Skin Benefits
Like other forms of fibre, Konjac glucomannan is a natural prebiotic, meaning that it “fertilize” the gut and promotes healthy bacteria colonies. Konjac glucomannan is thought to be particularly effective at reducing some of the harmful bacteria associated with acne, and is used in traditional Chinese medicine to promote skin health. A 2013 study found that when applied topically, Konjac glucomannan significantly improved the appearance of mild to severe acne.
Blood Sugar Regulation
Konjac glucomannan is higher in starch which is considered a complex carb. Due to the make up of complex carbs, the sugar absorption is delayed in the digestive tract, naturally resulting in lower blood sugar levels after meals. In a study of high-risk patients with type 2 diabetes, participants who consumed glucomannan-enriched biscuits with meals experienced lower blood sugar levels, improved lipids and reduced blood pressure.
Cholesterol Reduction
Soluble fibres have long been prescribed to assist the body in reducing cholesterol. Because soluble fibre isn’t absorbed by the intestine, it can bind to cholesterol while in the gut and excreted from the body. According to studies by the National Institute of Health, adding 5-10 grams of fibre a day can help reduce LDL, also known as “bad cholesterol”.
Konjac glucomannan has been shown to be particularly effective in lowering cholesterol. A 2017 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that 3 grams of glucomannan taken daily for four weeks can reduce LDL by 10 percent.
Suggested Dose
Adults: Take 1/4 tsp daily. Slowly build up to a maximum of 1 tsp twice daily
Children 2 years and above. Take 1/4 tsp daily.
Can be taken mixed with water or juice, or mixed with food.
Possible Side Effects
As a bulking agent, Konjac glucomannan can lead to cramping, bloating and general abdominal discomfort. Diarrhoea can occur, as can constipation, especially when not consumed with enough water. Because glucomannan can lower blood sugar levels, it may be dangerous in combination with drugs used to treat diabetes.
