Peppermint oil is a fabulous refreshing and cooling essential oil used to stimulate the mind, increase mental agility and to increase focus. It is also used to cool the skin, reduce redness and calm irritation and itchiness. Excellent to help clear the sinuses and chest when feeling congested. It is well renown for easing spastic colon (stomach cramps), nausea, migraine, headaches, sinus and chest congestion.
Peppermint oil has a long history of use in liniments and balms for the relief of pain, spasms, and arthritic problems.
Peppermint oil has been well studied and documented for its anti-inflammatory, analgaesic, anti-infectious, antimicrobial, antiseptic, antispasmodic, astringent, digestive, carminative, and fungicidal effects. It is a nervine stimulant, vasoconstrictor, decongestant and has stomachic properties [ref].
Widely used in medicines for relief of symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), it is more effective than placebo, but ingestion does carry a high risk of adverse effects [ref]. It is only advisable to use for short-term relief, under guidance of an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

How to Use Peppermint Oil
For a steam inhalation add 1 drop to a bowl of boiling water. Inhale the vapour.
For headaches: Mix 5-10 drops with 10nL of jojoba oil. Put into a glass roller bottle for quick application to the temples of back of your neck to help ease tension and pain.
For oil burners, and misters: add 2-3 drops to the water reservoir
For topical application: blend into base creams & lotions at up to 3% concentration
Add to personal massage blends at the rate of 1-2 drops per 30mL of a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil.
Cautions for Using Peppermint Oil
Peppermint oil is naturally high in menthol, which can cause irritation to the skin and mucous membranes and should be kept well away from the eyes.
It should be avoided during pregnancy and should not be used on children under seven.
Do not take internally.
